Ulster Senior Hurling Championship 2017

(Oldest Posts First)

Saturday April 08 2017 - Ulster GAA Hurling Senior Championship
Armagh V Down
Antrim V Donegal

Can anyone stop Antrim winning their 16th (SIXTEENTH!!) Championship in a row??

Armagh turned the form book upside-down last year and managed to beat Down in the semi-finals and really put it up to Antrim in the final. Will Down be able to make amends and beat them at the same stage of the competition this weekend...hard to call! Armagh got relegated from 2A this year and will meet Down in 2B (who finished mid-table). The harder games in 2A will certainly help Armagh and they will be more than up for this fixture. Down had wins over Mayo and Derry and will fancy themselves to make amends for last year slip up...and I fancy them to do just that!
Down to win by 3 points!
Hard to see past anything other than an Antrim victory by 15+ points in the other semi-final.

SENIOR SHIELD SEMI-FINALS
Tyrone V Fermanagh
Monaghan V Derry

Tyrone should beat Fermanagh and Derry should have too much fire-power for a poor Monaghan side in the Ulster Shield and go on and win the competition as a whole.

Beat again yesterday. It seems to be that teams around us are progressing in their development but Down are going in reverse. Where do we go from here? Last season we went to the league play off and pushed Antrim in the Ulster Championship. Bad season for the development of the players, bad season for the county.

Down 2-12 Armagh 1-17

Two point defeat for Down Hurlers in the #Ulster2017 Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final @Armagh_GAA 1-17 @OfficialDownGAA 2-12.

At half time Down led the game 2-05 to 0-07, with Mal Magee scoring both Down Goals. With only 4 mins left on the clock Down lead 2-12 to 1-12, however in the dying minutes Armagh rallied and hit 5 points to claim the win and a place in the final where they will take on Antrim. The 25th minute dismissal of Caolan Bailie proved costly for Down as the Orchard County made the most of their numerical advantage.

Antrim overcame Donegal in the other semi final 3-24 to 1-10. Donegal and Down will now contest the relegation final.

Yeah, is a hard one to take....a few years back and Down would have been hammering Armagh.
You have to commend Armagh for the obvious work they are doing at underage level; it now appears to be reaping rewards. Having said that, the development managers at underage level (U17 in particular) are doing a great job in Down. It just appears that the transition from youth level to a fully fledged senior County player is a path too far for many.
Any chance of getting the McGuinness lads back in a down shirt! What about McCusker from Ballela...McCrickard & McManus from Laitroim...Are these lads still involved in the County set-up? Hughes from Bredagh was involved in the Down football squad but I am not sure he got much of a chance; get him back with the hurlers for the Christy Ring. Big Magic came on as a sub last week, why not try him from the start on Sunday against Donegal.

I was reading the match report and it looks like Down just couldn't hold on and Armagh scored the winning points in the dying minutes.

Development at underage is certainly not the problem. Down and Antrim are miles ahead of all the other Ulster Counties from u14 through to Minor. For christ sake Armagh couldn't even field at different underage levels last year.. The issue is bringing our county wide talent at U17/minor over the last few years, through to the Senior team. For some reason the seniors this years seems to be only Ards players with 1 or 2 others add in. It's also not fair on our 3 Senior clubs to be losing lots of players to County Team when their is plenty of other talent to pick form across the county. Look at the U21 championship last year, we had 6 even teams all a good standard so in theory to get the best u21 sqaud, it should be roughly half Ards and half main land. The main thing is the underage talent is their which a lot of other Christy Ring counties would love to have.

Oh dear lord, the U21's as welcome an inclusion as it was, was played as an end of season jaunt with little or no preparation done by any of the teams that I'm aware of so don't be going and reading anything into that. Ports won it handy enough and had to pull lads in who hadn't played in years, like ourselves and Ballygalget.

The stark reality is that the three Ards clubs, are at a low ebb, Ports relegated, we fended off relegation with a few wins at the end and Ballygalget were in Div2. Expect much the same this year in terms of ourselves and Ballygalget fighting relegation and the Ports too strong for Div2 and learning nothing about themselves. The Loughgeil's, Dunloys and Dalls will put 15 to 20 points on us mark my words.
The much vaunted hurlers in the non ards areas aren't developing into senior adult hurlers with the odd exception in Liatroim, Newry or whatever who've always thrown up good hurlers once in a while without these elite squads in place anyway.

So where's all these top notch hurlers in Down waiting to take us to the next level irrespective of what part of the county they're from? I haven't seen them and I watch a fair bit of hurling on a given week?

It would have been one sided and Donegal made the decision to drop down. Quite rightly IMO.

I understand the concept of promotion/relegation in the Ulster championship, but lets face it Derry will walk the Shield final and go straight back up but its not going to work if the likes of Donegal or Tyrone are way out of their depth. so maybe allow the shield winners to enter in the given year they win the shield the way the Christy Ring winners are now into the round robin AI championships.
That way they get a game or two at their level with a crack at the bigger teams rather than take the hammering(s) Donegal took against the Antrim reserves and potentially Down which serves no one.

A bit of old biddy saved then with no trip up the Glenshane pass.

Tyrone 1-12 V 1-17 Derry
Armagh 1-12 V 5-22 Antrim

Well, no surprises at the weekend then!
Antrim destroyed Armagh in the SHC Final and Derry annexed the Shield competition to ensure they are back in the SHC proper next year (although fair play to Tyrone who managed to hold them to 5 points)
Really disappointed that Donegal withdrew from the relegation play-off; It would have done our lads the world of good to get a game the week before the Christy Ring
