Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O. GOOD WEEKEND FOR WESTMEATH FOOTBALL AS GARRYCASTLE AND TUBBERCLAIR REACH LEINSTER CLUB FINALS: LEINSTER CLUB SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: On what can only be described as a winters day Garrycastle overcame a strongly fancied Ballyboden St Enda's side with a resilient performance in the AIB Leinster Football Championship semi-final. Ballyboden took the field without key marksmen Conal Keaney a flu victim and Kenny Naughton, and could only manage two points to Garrycastle's five (two from the boot of stalwart Dessie Dolan) in the first half as who played with the aid of a very strong breeze. Garrycastle defended well in the start of the second period and a Mark McCallan goal in the 16th minute put them six points up, and when Gary Dolan was put through on goal six minutes later one could have been forgiven for thinking it was all over for Ballyboden but a fine save by keeper Daire Walsh kept the Dublin side in the match. Try as they might Ballyboden could not break down a resolute Garrycastle defence who ran out winners by 1-8 to 0-6 and booked a place in this year's Leinster final. LEINSTER CLUB INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Tubberclair continued their good run in this year's club championship with a hard fought win over Walsh Island last Sunday. This win means that Westmeath now have two clubs competing in the Leinster club football finals. Tubberclair had to dig deep and come from behind as they trailed at the break by 0-06 to 0-03 and could have been further behind if Walsh Island hadn't been so wasteful in shooting nine wides, but to their credit Tubberclair dug deep restricting Walsh Island to a single point in the second half and came out on the right side with a two point margin and 1-06 to 0-07 and will now face Maynooth in the final. LIVING HISTORY: As part of the 125 year celebrations for the greatest amateur sporting organisation on earth, Baker Security and Networks, would like to make a presentation to the GAA museum. As befits a new era for this organisation, this presentation will be of the form of an electronic map showing the location of every GAA club in the world. The map will have more than the club location however, we hope it will form part of the living history of the organisation and to make it possible we need your help. We need you to tell us about your club, its past, present and heroes - but only as much as you want to. Put your name at the end of the piece you write, or get some help and put all your names down, and you will forever become part of the history of the GAA. Later on we hope you will be able to upload photographs and other interesting details about your club. 15 SILVER PROOF COMMEMORATIVE COIN: The specially commissioned 15 silver proof coin is only available from the following sources: Central Bank, Dublin - email [email protected] Order forms available from www.centralbank.ie Locall numbers (1890 307 607) and from the north & overseas (0035312198000). The issue will have to be addressed as soon as possible so I appeal to all clubs to commence the process as soon as possible. 2 E-Mail As we are all aware by now the GAA has introduced a new email system and as a consequence is winding down service on the old email server. As highlighted previously full decommissioning of the old server will take place on Monday November 30th 2009 at 10:00am. What this will mean is? E-Mail service on the old email system will no longer be available and users will be unable to log into that system. Information on the new email system can be found under the following link: http://newmail.gaa.ie/ As of the 23/10/2009 85% of GAA clubs are active and using the new GAA email system which is quite good but we need to get to the famous 100%.
