Wexford land IHC crown

August 25, 2007
Waterford lost out yet another big hurling game as Wexford ran out narrow winners in this All-Ireland IHC final played at Nowlan Park thanks to a late Ciaran Lyng goal. Wexford 1-11 Waterford 1-9 It was a goal from Ciaran Carey after seven minutes which saw the Munster champions move 1-1 to 0-1 ahead but the Model men dominated for a spell thereafter with five consecutive points putting them two ahead, thanks to efforts from David Redmond, John Breen (2) and Pat Doran (2). Waterford rallied before the interval with late points from Pat Fitzgerald and Ger Power pushing them into an unlikely 1-6 to 0-8 interval advantage. David Howard extended the Waterford lead on the resumption before Doran replied for Wexford after a long spell without a score. Waterford then went two points clear again but it was at this juncture that the Leinster side made the vital move. There were only six minutes of normal time left to play when Lyng got his hurl to the sliothar to grab a goal out of nowhere and put Wexford a point up. John Roche extended that advantage to two before Carey brought Waterford back to within one yet again. The game was up for grabs at that stage but it was Wexford who held on thanks to a late '65 from the impressive Doran.
