Waterford County Camogie club notes

October 14, 2013
Senior Lismore Victory dedicated to the memory of the late Johnny Flynn

Goals either side of halftime seal victory for Lismore in the 2013 Senior Camogie championship which was played against St. Annes on Saturday 12th October in Killrossanty.

Both of the two teams had a large number of Waterford's Intermediate team involved so the standard of camogie was expected to be high and so it proved. Both teams can be proud of the skills on show but the determination of Lismore meant that the title headed to the West this year.

In the early part of the match points were scored from frees on both sides. Right from the throw-in Lismore's first attack of the match led to free which Aoife Hannon scored. This was cancelled shortly after when Karen Kelly scored her first point of the encounter when she scored which was on the 45 meter line and close to the right sideline. St. Anne's then took the lead when Karen Kelly scored again from a free in a much easier position in front of the goal and was further extended their lead by 2 points from the hurley of Karen Kelly when she converted two further frees. The camogie standard between these frees was high but Lismore were being punished for indiscipline in their defence. Lismore's Aoife Hannon next scored from a free before the first score from play of the afternoon came from Caitriona McGlone to reduce the deficit to the minimum.
Lismore had not learned their lesson yet, and when Karen Kelly scored two more frees after their defence had fouled St. Anne's players the score stood at 0-6 to 0-3. Next up was a 45 to Lismore which Aoife Hannon dropped in and was put out for another 45. This time Aoife Hannon slotted the ball between the uprights and then Lismore captain Shona Curran gathered the sliotar and fired over from play.

St. Anne's scored their first point from play after 20 minutes but almost immediately Lismore responded with a goal. Shona Curran took a free out on the 45 meter line which was fired in powerfully but not dealt with by St. Anne's defence and the sliotar ended in the back of the net through a forest of hurleys. This gave Lismore the lead again but was squandered when more indiscipline in their defence allowed Karen Kelly to score two more frees, also Sarah Fitzgerald scored a point from play and were unlucky not to score a goal when a shot flew past Aisling O'Brien in the Lismore goal but it rebounded off the upright and was fired over for a point. Just before the halftime interval Aoife Hannon reduced the difference when she converted the final score of the half to leave the score at St. Annes 0-11 to Lismore's 1-06 but the indiscipline meant that 8 of St. Anne's points were scored from frees and if Lismore could eliminate these errors knew that there players were capable of winning this title.

The Lismore mentors must have said some inspiring words at halftime because they came out at full throttle. Lismore first attack of the second half ended in a wide but right from the puck-out Lismore fired the sliotar back in a scored their second goal when Sinead Bennett fired into the net. This gave Lismore the lead and they did not surrender it again. Over the next 5 minutes Lismore scored another 5 points with no reply from St. Annes. First up was a score from play from Johanna Houlihan and four scores from Aoife Hannon (3 frees and a 45). The score stood at Lismore 2-11 to St. Anne's 0-11.
Credit must be given to St. Annes who did not crumble and tried to rally and scored the next two scores. First up was powerful run from Mairead Murphy who path was blocked but Karen Kelly was at hand to shoot over from play followed by another point from a free.

As the match drew to a close St. Annes scored two more points, one from Sinead Cummins from play and another Karen Kelly free but Lismore scored four points in the same period, 3 from Aoife Hannon placed ball and the final score of the afternoon came from Johanna Houlihan from play.
When the final whistle was blown Lismore were 2013 Senior Championship winners by a score of 2-15 to 0-15.
When the cup was presented both Waterford County Chairperson Tricia McCarthy and Lismore captain Shona Curran paid tribute to Lismore camogie stalwart Johnnie Flynn who sadly passed away early this year and in whose honour the team won this trophy for.
