Fr Rocks crowned Intermediate League Champions A bumper crowd was in attendance at Paddy Cullen Park on Sunday afternoon, as Fr Rocks faced Derrylaughan, knowing that victory would secure the league title and a place in Senior Football next season. The game started at blistering pace and from the throw in Barry Hughes charged forward to kick a brilliant long range point to signal the home team intent. Derrylaughan responded immediately with a well worked score, before Brian O'Neill jinked his way through the packed defence to kick a score from close range. The teams exchanged scores throughout an action packed half, with the superb Conor Mullan converting two excellent scores, the first from close range and the second a great effort in the fifteenth minute to put the Rocks a point ahead. Derrylaughan equalised again, before Barry Mulligan kicked from long range to give Cookstown a one point lead at half time on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-5. Fr Rocks increased the intensity all over the pitch after half time and began to unlock the packed visitors defence with some clever football. Conor Mullan fired over another superb effort five minutes into the half, and a counter attack from the home side saw Christopher Eastwood finish in style with the outside of the boot to leave Cookstown three ahead after ten minutes. Derrylaughan responded once again and a five minute rally saw them kick two scores and reduce the game to just one point. The final fifteen minutes belonged to Fr Rocks, as sensing the finishing line, they increased the tempo and intensity and took control of the game. Raymond Mulgrew started the onslaught when he converted a free kick from twenty yards, Conor Mullan and Martin Murray both scored from play and another Murray free kick stretched the lead to five points with ten remaining on the clock. Derrylaughan could only muster a solitary breakaway point after a mistake in the Cookstown defence, and scores from Christopher Eastwood and substitute Owen Mulligan extended the lead further. Barry Mulligan finished the half as he did the first with a well taken score in injury time, and brought the curtain down on a very successful league campaign, which saw the Rocks finish champions. The final scoreline finished 0-15 to 0-8. This was another excellent all round team performance, which epitomised the season as a whole, mention must go to Conor Mullan and Barry Hughes who were outstanding throughout the game. The Fr Rocks team took the field as follows; M Rea, R Pickering, S Monaghan, C O'Hare, S McGarrity, B Hughes (0-1),G Fitzpatrick, B O'Neill (0-1), R Mulgrew (0-2 frees), C Eastwood (0-2), B Mulligan (0-2), Brian Mulligan, J Quinn, C Mullan (0-4), M Murray (0-2,1free). Subs; O Mulligan (0-1) for J Quinn, P McGurk for C O'Hare, D McGuckin for M Rea. Senior and Reserve Fixtures The Seniors fresh from securing the league title will enter the championship fray on Sunday afternoon. A big Cookstown support is expected in Pomeroy for the clash against Greencastle which has a throw in time of 2pm. Underage Training Paddy Cullen Park was the venue for under 6, 8s and 10s end of season blitz. Teams from Moneymore and Lissan participated in what was a very successful day of football. A youth presentation evening will take place on Friday 2nd October at the Greenvale Hotel at 7pm, this evening will be for players and parents of the under 8s and 10s. Under 16s A stunning second half performance from Fr Rocks Under 16s saw them progress to the County Final in what was a thrilling game at Donaghmore on Saturday afternoon. Fr Rocks produced a lacklustre display in the first half, nothing seemed to go their way, and they had just a solitary late free from Barry Potter to show for their efforts. The boys faced a mountain to climb as Clonoe were rampant and led 1-6 to 0-1 at half time. Some stern words from the management appeared to do the trick and the Rocks took the field when more determination after the break. A brilliant move down the wing in the second minute saw Ryan Owens punch a high ball to the net to start what was to prove to be a roller coaster second half. An Owen Coyle point from play a minute later confirmed the Cookstown dominance, however disaster struck minutes later when Clonoe found the back of the net and appeared to end the game as a contest. Fr Rocks however refused to give up and a brilliant five minute spell brought them right back into the game. Ciaran Owens latched on to a breaking ball and fired the ball past the Clonoe keeper, the boys at this stage were playing some great football and another goal from Osin Maguire reduced the Clonoe lead to just four points. The major turning point in the game arrived with just ten minutes to go, Barry Potter displayed great composure to convert a pressure penalty to leave just one point between the teams. Fr Rocks showed fantastic resilience in the final ten minutes of the game, they refused to give up and an Owen Coyle score from play brought them level. The O'Rahillys did reply with a well worked point but it was scores from James McGahan, John McIvor and Barry Potter that ensure that the Rocks would progress to the final on a scoreline of 4-7 to 2-11. The team lined out as follows; N Wallace, C Kelly, C Blake, R Mullan, T Brennan, M Hughes, J McIvor(0-1), C Owens, L McCrackin, P Murray, B Potter (1-2), O Coyle (0-2), J McGahan (0-1), R Owens (1-1), O Maguire(1-0); subs: G Kelly, P McGarry, P Hughes, G McKenna, O O'Connor, C McGurk. This was a brilliant all round team performance and means that the boys will get to contest the Grade One Under 16 final which will be played on 18th October before the county final. Well done to all the boys and management on a great achievement. www.fatherrocks.com Check out the website for all breaking news from the club www.fatherrocks.com Members, players, supporters and Gaels throughout the world will now be able to catch up with club affairs with the click of a button.
