Senior Hurling League Final
St Fechins 2-11
Pearse Óg 0-9
St Fechins took home the Senior Hurling League title for the second time on Thursday night in Darver. The fixture was a repeat of last years championship final and having met in the league only two weeks ago, it's fair to say the teams are on familiar terms. St Fechins reversed the result of the most recent fixture helped in part by a first half exhibition in scoring from Paul Mathews.
Although a Shane Callan free put Pearse Óg on the board after a minute, it was St Fechins who had the stronger opening. Paul Mathews opened his account with two points in two minutes, quickly followed by scores from Vincent Hynes and David Stephenson. After eight minutes Mathews bounced a shot past Pearse Óg 'keeper Kevin Brady. A minute later he rose highest and with a glorious flick sent the sliotar to the back of the net once again. Seaghan Conneely looked like he could have added a third goal but opted for a point, following it up minutes later with a second. A number of tactical changes for Pearse Óg meant they tightened up in defence and they pulled back three points before half time. A final point from Paul Mathews saw the sides go in at the break with St Fechins leading by 2-7 to 0-4.
St Fechins began the second half with a free from Paddy McCormack but could not keep up their prolific scoring rate. Pearse Óg, determined to play their way back into the game, upped their intensity in attack. However their attempts to burst through St Fechins defence were rebuffed by the excellent Robert Moynagh and Oisín Byrne among others. Points from Vincent Hynes, Michael Ryan and a final free from David Stephenson cancelled out scores from Pearse Óg. St Fechins captains Paddy McCormack and Cormac McAuley accepted the cup from county chairman Des Halpenny to the cheers of St Fechins supporters. Celebrations however will be short lived as the Senior Hurling Championship returns next week where St Fechins will attempt to defend their title.
