Charlie Smyth has been released by the New Orleans Saints just a fortnight before the start of the new NFL season.

It comes after the former Down goalkeeper played in a final pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys last Friday. In the same game, Daniel Carlson - who the Saints recently brought in as a free agent kicker - landed two field goals to help them to a 27-24 victory. 

Smyth had also featured in a recent pre-season game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was expected to retain his spot after signing a three-year deal last December. Having joined the Saints via the International Player Pathway (IPP) in 2024, the Mayobridge man could still be retained on the Saints' practice roster as IPP players do not count towards the 16-player limit, or he could be recruited by another NFL team.

The Saints kick off their NFL season against the Detroit Lions on Sunday week.
