DkIT Fresher Footballers top the table
November 09, 2010
DkIT overcame a spirited DCU2 outfit in the second game of their Division 2B league campaign. Played on Wednesday last (November 3rd), on the DCU Sports Grounds in Ballymun, DkIT knew that a win would put them on top of the league alongside UUJ after their opening day victory over IT Blanchardstown.
DkIT got off to a blistering start as midfielder Colm Smyth (Kingscourt, Cavan) showed his teammates the way with his sides opening two scores. Ten minutes in and corner forward Brendan Treanor (Truagh, Monaghan) added to Dundalk's tally with a fine individual effort. Fellow Farneyman, Rory Beggan (Scotsman, Monaghan) was soon to follow, fisting over DkIT's fourth score in the opening quarter. The home side got on the score sheet after seventeen minutes to narrow the gap to three points but this was to be the closest they got to DkIT all day. After another lung bursting run, Smyth added a further point to his personal tally and was quickly followed by his midfield partner Sean Keogh (Donabate, Dublin) who stuck the ball sweetly over the bar from thirty-five metres. To their credit DCU2 reacted and two points in quick succession brought them back into the contest with half time approaching. DkIT responded through the boot of Jamie Kelly (Naomh Malachi, Louth) who struck the ball over from the 21-metre line following a surging run from his wing back position. However, on the stroke of half time DCU2 got their fourth and final score of the half to leave three points between the sides at the interval.
Half time: DCU2 0-04 DkIT 0-07
Following the interval, DCU2 started the brighter of the two sides and narrowed the gap with the opening score of the second half. Indeed only for a fine stop from goalkeeper Sean Connolly (O'Connells, Louth), the Dublin outfit could have taken the lead. Management team Colin Cooney, David Cranny and Shane Lennon sprung the changes and the introduction of substitute Adam O'Connell (Ramor, Cavan) led to the opening score the half for his Dundalk team. Over the next ten minutes both sides traded scores with Sean Shevlin (Aughnamullen, Monaghan) and Beggan claiming the visiting sides scores. Soon after, Shevlin swapped positions with Smyth and came to the fore in his more familiar midfield role adding another fine score for DkIT, following a one-two with wing forward Shane Rice (Scotstown, Monaghan). Beggan added another score to his personal tally, slotting over a free kick after wing back Conor Gonnelly (Naomh Malachi, Louth) was abruptly stopped in his tracks on route to goal. However, DkIT couldn't get away from their hosts as DCU2 reacted with the next two scores of the contest to leave three points between the sides yet again. Going into the final ten minutes of the match DkIT gained the upper hand and both Beggan and Sheridan again answered the call, tagging over fine scores after good work by substitutes Eoin Duffy (St Fechins, Louth) and Conor Toal (Eire Og, Monaghan). DCU2 gabbed their tenth point of the day in the final minute but wing forward Mark Treanor (Scotstown, Monaghan) was to have the final say as he fired the ball over the bar to seal
victory for the visitors.
Full time: DCU2 0-10 DkIT 0-15
Best for DkIT were full back Fionn Kearney (Sylvesters, Dublin), corner back Ciaran Murray (Dundalk Young Irelands, Louth) and centre back Daniel McCarey (Scotstown, Monaghan) who marshalled their defence well. Colm Smyth (Kingscourt, Cavan) and Sean Sheridan (Aughnamullen, Monaghan) performed well in the midfield sector, adding to the score sheet when called upon. In the forwards, the tireless Shane Rice (Scotstown, Monaghan) ran himself into the ground and fellow clubman Rory Beggan got some vital scores from his full forward position. Scorers: Rory Beggan (0-4), Sean Sheridan (0-03), Colm Smyth (0-3), Jamie Kelly, Sean Keogh, Mark Treanor, Brendan Treanor and Adam O'Connell (0-1 each).
