Jack Egan RIP

All in the club extend sympathy to Jack's sister Nell, brother Jim and to the Egan family on the death of Jack Egan, a Newcastle West GAA stalwart all his life on and off the playing field. The late Jack from Ballinena was one of a generation of old greats, the Kelly brothers Jim, Tom, Jack, Willie, Tommy Danagher, the late Moss Hurley who were prominent dual players from the late 1940s, backboning Newcastle West hurling and football teams as they pursued honours all over west Limerick, Limerick and north Kerry; they battled it out on the playing fields of Dromcollogher, Ballingarry, the Bog Garden, Moyvane, Kilmallock etc with the elite teams and players of the era, engaging in stirring battles for hard to win county, west and tournament titles such as Ardagh, Feohanagh, Feenagh/Kilmeedy, Rathkeale, Castletown/Ballyagran, Dromcollogher etc as Timmy Woulfe, Tommy Kelly, Jack Bell Enright, the Bugs Gerry Fitzgerald, the Longs, Seán Murphy, Jim Morrissey, Don Broderick, the Quaids, Derry McCarthy stood between Newcastle West and divisional/county success.

The late Jack usually operated in the full back line with occasional appearances in the forwards, and fronting such well known custodians as Willie Kelly, Christy O'Connor, the late Seán Normoyle and in the company of the late John Nix, Seán and Billy O'Connor, other inhabitants of Hell's Kitchen was well able to hold his own in often robust exchanges. Small in stature but with the skill and sturdiness of a Fan Larkin he was intimidated by no opposition, however many inches he was giving away. Few honours came the way of the teams he served so well. There were hard luck stories, though there was a county junior football title to savour in 1960  but the performances of Jack and his team-mates of that era are well remembered. After his retirement from the playing field Jack continued to be an avid follower of Newcastle West and Limerick GAA teams supporting club and county at venues far and near, enjoying the games he played with such relish and enthusiasm. He was part of the backroom team that managed the junior hurlers to west honours in 1996 and county honours in 2001 and certainly enjoyed that golden era of Newcastle West hurling. He was also grounds man at the club for many years, part of the field's committee that has transformed the field into one of the most popular in division and county and was a familiar figure there for many years as he used his considerable skills to maintain the pitch in pristine condition. He retained a great interest in the club into his later years and supported all its fundraisers, activities etc and was one of its regular quota of lottery ticket sellers, winning the occasional lucky dip himself.  Jack served the club with dedication, commitment, enthusiasm, hard work for nearly all of his eighty years and he will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
