The Late Joe Walsh The death took place of Joe Walsh who, together with his brothers Paddy and Donal, founded the very successful Grassland Fertilisers in the Pepperfield in Palmerstown in 1964. As young boys they learned their hurling in the CBS, James Street Joe was the best of the three and had a short run as a senior, playing with Eire Og before joining Dicksboro with Paddy. Together they won a senior county championship beating Eire Og after a drawn game in 1950. At that time the unofficial headquarters at Dicksboro was in the licensed premises of Dan Walsh in Irishtown. In 1993 Grassland Fertilizers sponsored Dicksboro when they won the county championship and continues to sponsor the club. When Joe retired from hurling he took up golf, a game at which he was a natural. One of his achievements was winning the captain's prize at the old clubhouse of Kilkenny golf club and repeating the feat in the new clubhouse. The Mercedes company held a competition for its customers at the Hermitage and the prize was an all-in trip to Germany, which Joe won. He was a person of deep faith and together with his wife Adrienne attended Sunday Mass in the oratory at Aut Even. When the St John of God nuns decided to build a new hospital, they invited Joe to advise them in the huge undertaking of raising over a million. To his wife Adrienne, her family, Joe's sister Mary, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and his large circle of friends both in business and the sporting world, we tender our sincere sympathy.
