The Late Jim Fogarty
The death took place on May 20 of Jim Fogarty, Knockmannon, Lisdowney, Co. Kilkenny. Jim was the founder member of the Lisdowney GAA Club in 1939. The first meeting was held in the Stirabout House, which no longer exists in Lisdowney village. In order to register the club he cycled to Kilkenny to lodge the registration papers.
Membership fee for the year was one shilling. He served in every office of the club, bar, treasurer. While in office the observance of priorities was the the utmost importance to Jim. His foresight, determination and the support of the local community helped make his dream possible. His collection of match programmes, national and local papers is testimony to his love of hurling.
Jim's continued support for the club was again evident in 1983 when he presented the National Flag to the club on the official opening of the community and GAA centre. On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee, in 1989 the late John Dowling (RIP), president of the GAA made a presentation to Jim on behalf of the club. The smile on his face showed how honoured he was. His interests in the GAA however did not interfere with his involvement with the camogie club, of which he was president for many years.
Jim Fogarty was a very humble man, who also had a love for nature, in particular the pheasant and the bees. In 2001, he became a resident in St Columba's Hospital in Thomastown where he was nursed by a wonderful team of staff. Here, he enjoyed visits and conversations with the neighbours who visited him regularly and would always have a grin or smile once the parish of Lisdowney was mentioned.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is laid to rest in Aharney Cemetery.
