Ulster Minor Hurling Championship Carryduff - v - St John's (Antrim)
Sunday 6th November Ballinascreen
The curtain finally came down on a magnificent campaign for the Carryduff Minor Hurling team on Sunday 6th November at Dean McGlinchey Park, Ballinascreen, home of St Colms, hosts of the tournament.
Semi-final opponents on the day were Antrim champions St Johns who had seen off opposition from Kilkenny and Wexford in preparation for the game.
The writing was on the wall early as St Johns opened up a 2-4 lead within minutes and Carryduff struggled against very formidable hurlers all over the park. A series of well taken points from play followed and St Johns racked up a big half time lead. The players rallied early in the second half and points from Lynch, both Conways and Lavery ensured the scoreboard was ticking over, but the Johnnies replied with four more goals to run out eventual winners 6-24 to 0-7.
The St John's manager Michael Johnson (also current coach of the Armagh Senior Hurlers), praised the Carryduff team after the game for their spirit and dedication and for well maintained discipline despite a very trying 60 minutes. Team manager Justin McCormick reminded the team of their exploits throughout the year, having defeated St Pauls, St Endas, Cushendall in Antrim, Slaughtneill in Derry, Keady in Armagh and Eoghan Ruadh in Tyrone, culminating in a tremendous victory over Portaferry to clinch the Down Minor Hurling Championship.
So the anguish of defeat on the day was quickly erased and replaced by joyous memories of the night of August 17, 2011, in Downpatrick, when history was made and Carryduff Minor Hurlers became County champions.
Juvenile Football
St Joesph's Primary school were beaten in the Canon Esler semi-final by Kilcoo. At half time Carryduff we were ahead 4-2 to 1-5
The 2nd half saw Carryduff bag another goal and that stage take control.
Kilcoo however started to play more effective football and claimed 2 goals in a 3 minute spell. Carryduff started to claw their way back into the game but when there was only a point between the teams, Kilcoo upped the tempo and started to pick off their points. Carryduff on the other hand missed a number of promising opportunities and although the boys of St Joseph's tried their best to get back in the game, Kilcoo held on to the final whistle. The final score was St Joseph's 5.5 to Kilcoo's 3.14 .
