The Black Spot

(Oldest Posts First)

While watching the games this evening it sort of dawned on me-what is the point of the black spot on the crossbar? Any historical reasoning behind it or is that just the way God made them?

clearly distinguishes the cross bar and the black at the top of the post make them stand out. On a day where visibility is poor they come in handy

Also, it helps when taking free kicks

Its more to do with helping the player to narrow down his/her target and help with his/her accuracy and improve scoring.Well thats my understanding of it anyway.

Probably to line up the penalty spot as most grounds as far as I know don't actually have a spot as such

Id say its just to help players know exactly where the middle of the posts are. Very important when trying to judge kicks, especially for free takers

It's a commemorative thing for sure. I know it's not a Famine memorial which would've been my first guess.

Is it something to do with the 'Accident Black Spot' signs that we used to have at the side of the roads? Maybe to encourage players to slow down when they're approaching the posts in case they bump into them or something? Not sure but it probably has something to do with it!!

not sure how it got on the cross bar, but the same black spot can play havoc with rose bushes, especilayy this month with all the rain, spraying with milk or a solution of bread soda(not to be confused with the poultice) can help.
