Senior Championship
Congratulations to our seniors on winning the championship in thrilling style in Bréifne Park on Sunday last. There was never much between the teams in a game which featured all that is good in gaelic football. Kingscourt, despite being a man down, made us fight all the way. This senior victory was our nineth in fourteen years and we were lining out in a senior final for the fifteenth time in seventeen years. There were joyous scenes when joint captains Eamonn Reilly and Martin Dunne lifted the Oliver Plunkett Cup. Well done to all the players, mentors, management and other helpers for their unstinting work with the senior panel this year. This victory was very welcome after the disappointment of last year's final. Comhghairdeas.
Under-16 Girls
Well done to our under-16 girls who have battled their way to the final by defeating Mountnugent and Lavey. The semi-final against Lavey on Sunday last in Bréifne Park was well contested with our girls snatching victory with a last minute goal. Best of luck to them in the final.
Croke Park U-12 Games
Congratulations to Jack Tully and Jack Elliott who took part in a series of under-12 games in Croke Park on Saturday last. This was a fantastic opportunity for under-12 players from many counties to play in the premier gaelic games stadium. Thanks to Cavan Games Development for their assistance with the event.
Sympathy
Our sympathy is extended to the family of John Teevan who passed away recently. The late John was closely associated with Cavan Gaels and was a club sponsor for many years. He sponsored club jerseys when he was working in the Crúiscín Lán. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Scór na nÓg
Those representing Cavan Gaels in this year's Scór na nÓg are busy preparing for the competition. Go neirí an tádh leo.
Willie Doonan Play
Well-known Bailieboro playwright Pauric McIntyre is working on a new play whose subject is the legendary Cavan county, Cavan Harps and Cavan Slashers player Willie Doonan. Willie, on his return from England, was also involved with Cavan Gaels in a managerial capacity. Any information on Willie's life which might merit inclusion in the play can be forwarded to J.J. Reilly 086-1005303.
Health and Wellbeing Seminar
Cavan Gaels club was represented at the Health and Wellbeing Seminar in the Hotel Kilmore recently. Guest speakers were Oisín McConville, former All-Ireland winner with Armagh and Crossmaglen. Oisín discussed his experiences in overcoming his gambling addiction and his work around the country promoting health and wellbeing. Susan Kenny, from the National Office for Suicide Prevention(NOSP), is currently assisting the NOSP in devising a new national policy aimed at reducing the incidence of suicide in Ireland. She outlined, in particular, how the GAA can contribute to this important work. She emphasised the importance of gaelic games and other sports as a means of promoting positive mental health in its participants. Colin Regan, former Leitrim footballer and the GAA's Community and Health Manager, looked at how coaches, officers, players and parents can contribute to a culture that fosters positive experiences in clubs. This, he argues, will result not just in better, more rounded players but healthier people as well. The onus now is on all sports clubs to promote health and wellbeing and to look out for any signs that a player needs help in this crucial area. Bímis ar faire.
