Death of Cathal Young.

It was with great sadness and regret that we learned about the death last Friday of Cathal Young. A true stalwart and ambassador for Cavan Gaels, Cathal was a leading player for the new club when it was formed in 1957.

He lined out on the first Gaels side to win a title, the league final of 1958, Cathal captained the team when they gained the trophy again in 1960.

His most cherished moment arrived in 1965 when playing in the forwards he won a county medal as the Gaels secured their first ever Senior championship.

When his playing days were over Cathal remained deeply involved in the GAA and became a leading light with the Civil Service GAA club in Dublin for many years.

Despite living most of his life in the city Cathal remained true to his roots and was an avid supporter of both the Cavan county team and the Gaels.

Having been ill for quite some time, many of us felt he would'nt make it down from Dublin for the county final against Kingscourt last year.

However as we entered the stand in Breffni, there was Cathal smiling at us.

The Gaels won and 56 years on from the league final of 1958 he rejoiced and celebrated with the best of us.

Cathal Young was a unique and special man, much loved and respected by everyone in Cavan Gaels. We will not see his like again.

We extend our sympathy to his wife Anne, his daughters and sons and extended family.  Cavan Gaels GAA

Mental Health

The HSE has launched a new mental health initiative called Little Things. It has a five point plan for good mental health which includes advice on keeping active, talking about your problems, looking out for others and drinking less alcohol. Alan O Mara, Cavan GAA player, has urged people to get involved with this initiative. On the same subject the GAA has developed a pack called Play in my Boots in partnership with St Patrick's Mental Health Foundation which is aimed at all who play sport. This pack can be downloaded from the website gaa.ie  People are reminded that there are many resources available dealing with mental health. Use them if you feel the need to. Help is always available. Let's take the stigma out of the subject of mental health. It's ok to say you're not ok.
