Cullen sides with outside takeover
August 19, 2008
Former Dublin manager Paddy Cullen has backed the idea of having an outside manager takeover the reins as Dublin manager after Paul Caffrey's departure.
Cullen guided the Metropolitans to a National Football League title back in 1991, and believes that the time might be right for the Dublin County Board to be looking outside the capital to replace Caffrey, citing Davy Fitzgerald's takeover ay Waterford as a perfect example of what can be done when an outsider comes in.
"We'll have to think strongly about going for an outside manager now," said Cullen.
"You can see what has happened with the Waterford hurlers. Davy Fitzgerald came in from the outside and they've broken through that barrier of getting to the All-Ireland final in the space of a couple of months.
"They looked like they were down and out and gone so there is the uplifting factor of a new broom and an outsider coming in."
Along with Cullen, Dublin legend Charlie Redmond has voiced his opinion for an manager outside the county to come in, that's despite being linked with the Dubs post himself.
