Brennan allays AFL recruitment fears
July 10, 2008
GAA president Nickey Brennan had quelled fears that a mass exodus of young talent to Australian Rules is imminent.
Concerns have been raised after the GAA's recent meeting with leading AFL agent Ricky Nixon, while a trial match was held by Carlton Blues' Gerard Sholly in Kingspan Breffni Park - without the Cavan county board's consent - last Friday.
"Ricky Nixon is due to submit a formal document to Paraic (Duffy, director-general) which we can use ourselves to discuss in house to make sure we are au fait with what he has in mind. Let's put that on paper first and take it from there," Brennan said.
"But I'd like to think that after we come back in October (from the International Rules), we will certainly have some type of formal arrangement for dealing with the matter that will be acceptable to all parties.
"Let's hear what the AFL have to say as well. They are the only body, from an Australian point of view, that can control this."
