The Dublin county board has paid a glowing tribute to the county's best known supporter, Bertie Ahern, who announced his plans to resign as Taoiseach on Wednesday morning. In a statement issued by chief executive/secretary John Costello, the board expressed its gratitude to Mr Ahern for his support down the years, and highlighted the important role he played in the redevelopment of Parnell Park a few years ago. The statement read: "The Dublin GAA Board wish to express our appreciation to the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, for his generous and unstinting support of Gaelic Games in our county. "The Taoiseach has been a supporter of the Dublin club and county scene for over 30 years and many projects were completed as a result of his interest and support. "The County Committee are indebted to him for his support for the development of Parnell Park and in his valued support of our various Coaching and Games Development initiatives which has resulted in a significant increase in participation. "Even with the burden of the Office of Taoiseach and the hectic schedule that the post entails, his support and patronage of Dublin GAA has been enormous and is very much appreciated. He has attended at club openings, developments and other functions at probably every club in Dublin over the years. "First and foremost the Taoiseach is a fan of Dublin GAA and we know he will continue to support our teams in their future quest for All-Ireland glory." Mr Ahern will step down from office on May 6 when it is expected that An Tanaiste and avid Offaly GAA fan Brian Cowen will be installed as his successor. Tweet
