O'Connor apologies to fans
December 05, 2006
Former Kerry manager Jack O'Connor has expressed regret for criticising Kerry supporters following his side's defeat to Cork in this year's Munster football final replay at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
A section of the Kerry support jeered team captain Declan O'Sullivan after he was substituted, and this prompted an angry response from O'Connor who admitted over the weekend that he went "a small bit over the top".
He said: "I have met a lot of people since who said that the negativity that came across in Cork was not indicative of the true Kerry supporters and I want to acknowledge that now," he told guests at the All-Ireland victory banquet in Killarney.
"In every sense of the word, while the Kerry supporters are the most demanding in the country, they are also the best in the country. And it was a very small minority who didn't do justice to Kerry supporters, the Kerry jersey or the county.
"I'd have to say that 99 per cent of the Kerry supporters are the best and we'd really like to thank you for that."
