Ireland ladies were not to be outdone by their male counterparts as they easily saw off Australia (130-15) in the inaugural Ladies International Rules match at Breffni Park, Cavan. Played on front of a small crowd due to the unusual timing of the match (4.30pm), the Irish got off to a flying start and raced into a 20-0 lead when captain Sarah O'Connor's two 'overs' were added to by a Cora Staunton goal and an over. The home side tore their opponents to shreds in the opening quarter and it was 12 minutes before the Australians even registered a score when Kathy Zacharaopoulos goaled from the penalty spot. Ireland replied with a second goal as Meath's Geraldine Doherty scored to leave the score 34-12 at the end of the first quarter and the rout continued in the second quarter as the Irish opened the gap to 77-14 by half time. Ireland manager Jarlath Burns rang the changes at half time, but this did little to affect the pattern of the game and a 130-15 victory was recorded. Meath's Mary Sheridan lead the way on the scoring stakes with 18 points and that was followed by 15 from Mayo star Cora Staunton. Tweet
