Erin U21 title for Kilkenny of Tipperary?

September 06, 2006
The 2006 All-Ireland senior title rests with Kilkenny, while the minor crown is settling in with Tipperary. Now the big question is, to which county the Erin U-21 All Ireland trophy will be heading? The answer will be provided at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon (1.30pm) when Kilkenny and Tipperary clash in the Erin U-21 All Ireland hurling final for the second time in three seasons and for the eighth time in all since the competition was introduced in 1964. Kilkenny, who last won the title in 2004, will be bidding for their 10th crown while Tipperary, whose last success was in 1995, are chasing their ninth honour. It will be a huge day for Kilkenny's John Tennyson, Richie Power and James Cha Fitzpatrick, all of whom played starring roles in the seniors win over Cork last Sunday. Fitzpatrick scored 0-8 in the U-21 semi-final win over 2005 champions, Galway, while Power hit 1-1.  If Kilkenny win, it will be the fourth time they captured both the senior and U-21 titles in the same year, having previously achieved it in 1974-75-2003. Tipperary won the senior and U-21 double on two occasions, 1964 and 1989. Kilkenny beat Wexford, Dublin and Galway to reach the final. Tipperary beat Clare, Cork and Antrim to reach the final. Senior star, Darragh Egan, who has scored 2-13 in the campaign so far, is Tipperary's main attacking ace while other senior panellists include James Woodlock and Jim Bob McCarthy. Tipperary have yet to concede a goal after three games this season.
