Canavan rows in behind GPA stand

Peter Canavan
Former Tyrone ace Peter Canavan has backed the Gaelic Players' Association in their request for a dividend from the extra revenue to be garnered by the GAA in the wake of their deal on Croke Park with the rugby and soccer authorities.
Canavan said he was "surprised and angered" by the comments of GAA PRO Danny Lynch who accused the GPA of being "opportunistic."
"I was never in favour of pay-per-play and I don't believe the majority of players are either," said the twice All-Ireland SFC medallist.
"What recent player surveys have shown is that what many would like is a semi-professional system where players would be properly taken care of and not be out of pocket, that's a very different thing.
"People may see us going on holidays and think all inter-county players are well treated nowadays but that's laughable.
"We're still looking for basic things like proper insurance and health care, travel expenses and gear for all players.
"There's an awful lot to be sorted out before you could even talk about semi-professional."
