AIB Provincial finals in Leinster and Ulster

November 22, 2005
It's AIB hurling final day in Leinster and football final day in Ulster on Sunday 27th November while Munster stages its two football semi-finals and Leinster holds a football semi-final replay to decide who plays Sarsfields (Kildare) in the final on Sunday 4th December. SUNDAY AIB Leinster SH final James Stephens (Kilkenny) v UCD (Dublin), Portlaoise, 2.0. James Stephens went 23 years without winning their third AIB Leinster hurling title but having won the 2004 championship and added the All-Ireland crown last St.Patrick's Day, they are now bidding for the Leinster two-in-a-row. Ironically, they face the same opposition as they did in 2004, when they won by a point. UCD, who are bidding for their first provincial title, have won three games in Leinster this season, beating Killyon, Birr and Oulart-The Ballagh while "The Village' saw off Naomh Eoin and Castletown. Last Year James Stephens 1-13 UCD 1-12 James Stephens led by 1-10 to 0-3 at half-time in last year's final but UCD staged a great recovery in the second half and actually drew level before David McCormack scored the winning point for 'The Village' on a day when Eoin Larkin, who is again their top scorer this year, hit 1-7. SUNDAY AIB ULSTER SF FINAL BELLAGHY (DERRY) v ST.GALL'S, (ANTRIM), OMAGH, 2.0 (Live TG4) Bellaghy to win their fourth AIB Ulster SF title or a first for St.Gall's? That's the intriguing question which will be answered in Omagh on Sunday as the champions of Derry and Antrim battle for the title. Both sides have underlined their excellent pedigree this season with Bellaghy dethroning 2004 champions, Crossmaglen Rangers in the quarter-final before disposing of Cavan Gaels in the semi-final. Remarkably, the scoreline was the same in both games with Bellaghy winning by 0-11 to 0-9. St.Gall's were equally impressive, beating a highly-rated Carrickmore (Tyrone) side in the quarter-final before eliminating last year's Ulster's runners-up, Mayobridge (Down) in the semi-final last Sunday. Bellaghy last won the title in 2000. SUNDAY AIB Leinster SF semi-final (replay) Kilmacud Crokes (Dublin) v Rhode (Offaly), Newbridge, 2.0 (Extra-time if necessary) A late point by Roy Malone earned Rhode a replay last Sunday. Kilmacud, for whom Mark Vaughan scored 1-5, led by 1-5 to 0-1 at half-time but Rhode battled back in the second half with goals from Padraig Sullivan and Niall McNamee bringing them right back into the game. Final details: The Leinster final will be played on Sunday week, December 4. If Sarsfields (Kildare) v Kilmacud Crokes the game will be played in Navan while a Sarsfields (who beat Mattock Rangers in the other semi-final last Sunday) v Rhode decider will be in Portlaoise. SUNDAY AIB MUNSTER SF semi-finals St.Senan's (Clare) v An Ghaeltacht (Kerry), Cooraclare, 2.30 Nemo Rangers (Cork) v Stradbally (Waterford), Pairc Ui Chaoimh, 2.30 An Ghaeltacht, who lost the 2004 All-Ireland final to Caltra, are back on the title trail as South Kerry, who won the county title, are not eligible to represent Kerry in the Munster campaign because of their divisional status. Led by the O Se brothers and Dara O Cinneide, An Ghaeltacht have a very experienced team who will have high hopes of making real progress in this campaign. St.Senan's overcame Monaleen (Limerick) in the quarter-final replay last Sunday and were full value for their 1-11 to 0-6 win. They led by 0-5 to 0-0 after 18 minutes and by 1-8 to 0-2 at half-time. ******** Nemo Rangers, the most successful club in the history of the AIB provincial and All-Ireland champions, will have home advantage against last year's Munster runners-up, Stradbally at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Stradbally, who lost the 2004 Munster final to Kilmurry-Ibrickane by a point in a replay, beat The Nire in the Waterford county final replay last Sunday. Nemo Rangers easily beat Ardfinnan (Tipperary) in the quarter-final.
