All-Ireland Camogie Club Championship finals
November 16, 2005
Reigning All Ireland camogie club champions, St.Lachtain's Freshford, Kilkenny and Liatroim Fontenoys of Down, are back to reclaim their titles in this year's All-Ireland camogie senior and junior club championship finals which take place on Sunday November 20th in McDonagh Park, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary at 12.45pm and 2.30pm respectively.
Newmarket on Fergus of Clare are in their first All Ireland junior final while Davitts of Galway will be hoping it's a case of third time lucky having been beaten by Granagh-Ballingarry of Limerick in their previous two All Ireland senior club final appearances (1999 and 2003). St. Lachtain's manager John Lyng (father of inter-county hurler Derek Lyng) and Davitts manager, David Blake are both leading their teams into their first All Ireland final.
It took two outings for Davitts to get past Cashel in their All Ireland semi-final. Caitriona Kelly contributed hugely to their win in the replay by scoring a hat-trick of goals. St. Lachtains Marie O'Connor also scored a hat-trick of goals in their All Ireland semi-final against Rossa of Antrim. Both teams have a number of current and former inter-county players on their teams including 2005 Camogie All Star nominees Imelda Kennedy (St. Lachtains), Lourda Kavanagh (Davitts) and Deirdre Murphy (Davitts). Murphy was the captain of the Clare team that was beaten in the All Ireland junior final by Dublin. Newmarket-on-Fergus also have inter-county players to call on for experience including Moira McMahon (sister of Diarmuid McMahon) and Catriona McMahon. Down and Liatroim Fontenoy's star Máirín McAleenan will surely have a big influence on the Liatrom Fontenoy performance. Her hat-trick of goals in the All Ireland semi-final against Drumcullen ensured her team was back to defend its title next Sunday. McAleenan was an All Star in 2004.
In Croke Park today at the All Ireland Club Finals preview President of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael, Miriam O'Callaghan said "the importance of the club finals in the fixtures is indicative of the dedication of camogie players to the game. The standard of camogie in these All Ireland finals is extremely high and I have no doubt that we will see two enthralling games next Sunday."
Since the first Club All-Ireland final was played back in 1964 this competition has grown in importance. In 2003 the junior competition was added to the fixtures list. Since it's inception seven counties have taken the Bill O'Carroll Cup home with them. Kilkenny lead the way with ten club All-Ireland titles safely tucked away. The famed St.Paul's captured their first in 1968. Oranmore were the first Galway winners in 1973.
