Hurling All Star nominees announced
October 20, 2004
All-Ireland hurling champions Cork have received thirteen All Star nominations while Waterford out number Kilkenny in the number of players up for awards. In all, eight counties have hurlers among the 45 nominated.
It comes as no surprise that Cork dominates the list of 45 nominees in which a total of eight counties are represented. The champions have all but two of their starting fifteen from the September All-Ireland final nominated for awards. Forwards Timmy McCarthy and Kieran Murphy are the two overlooked on this occasion.
Waterford, winners of the Munster championship, receive eight nominees while defeated All-Ireland finalists Kilkenny have seven representatives challenging for All Star honours.
Among the Kilkenny men nominated is DJ Carey, who is aiming to win a record tenth All Star award. The Gowran ace is currently tied with Kerry football legend Pat Spillane who also has nine awards to his name.
Nine of last year's Vodafone All Stars have again been nominated - Sean Og O'hAilpin (Cork), Ronan Curran (Cork), Joe Deane (Cork), Ollie Canning (Galway), Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny), JJ Delaney (Kilkenny), Derek Lyng (Kilkenny), Henry Shefflin (Kilkenny) and John Mullane (Waterford).
The county by county breakdown is: Cork (13), Waterford (8), Kilkenny (7), Wexford (6), Galway (4), Tipperary (3), Limerick (2), and Clare (2).
