Thurles Sarsfields goalkeeper Paddy McCormack is set to make history this Sunday when he features in his 15th Tipperary senior hurling championship final.

The 42-year-old will line out against Moycarkey-Borris at FBD Semple Stadium, having first appeared in a county decider back in 2003.

McCormack is set to become only the second player from any club to feature in 15 SHC finals in the Premier County, behind the legendary Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne, who appeared in 17 deciders for Sarsfields.

Speaking to TippFM Sport this week, Sars captain Conor Stakelum praised the veteran goalkeeper’s dedication and influence within the squad.

“He’s brilliant and he’s a student of the game. He says himself he’s always still learning and wanting to improve, even at Paddy’s age, he won’t mind me saying that!

“He’s just brilliant and he has a real calm head and he has so much experience, but Paddy trains really hard. He’s one of the first ones up and last to leave.

“It’s an honour every day you get to go out and tog out with Paddy. He’s been there through thick and thin and it’s another huge honour for him and his family again to see him playing in another county final.”

Sars are bidding to claim their first county senior title since 2017 when they take on Moycarkey-Borris, who are out to claim what would their first SHC success in 42 years.

Throw-in at FBD Semple Stadium on Sunday is at 4pm.
