Grief-stricken former Offaly camogie captain Triona McDonald put the most difficult week of her life behind her by returning to action last Friday night.

Just nine days after her husband Tom Doyle passed away after a battle with cancer, Triona lined out for her adopted Four Roads in a 2-8 to 1-3 victory over St Dominic’s in Round 2 of the Roscommon Senior Camogie Championship. There were touching scenes afterwards when Triona joined her team-mates in a huddle on the field.

After an emotional evening, Four Roads posted the following on Facebook: “Some evenings are about much more than camogie.

“Tonight, our Senior team took to the field for the first time since the heartbreaking passing of Tom, beloved husband of our team-mate and friend Tríona. Before the game, both teams stood together for a minute’s silence in Tom’s memory – a poignant moment for everyone present.

“And then Tríona did something incredibly brave. Just one week after losing Tom, she pulled on the Four Roads jersey and took her place alongside her team-mates.

“The girls went out and produced a brilliant team performance, coming away with the win. But perhaps the most important moment of the evening came afterwards.

The post concluded: "One team. One circle. One big hug around our Tríona. There will be difficult days ahead, but you will never face them alone. We’ve got you, Tríona. Always. Tonight’s one was for Tríona & Tom.”
