Former Mayo manager James Horan has linked up with Moycullen as the club looks to defend its Galway senior football championship title this autumn.

The Connacht Tribune confirmed yesterday that Horan had joined Cathal Clancy’s star-studded backroom team, which already sees Clare selector Kieran Murphy and Brian Roche from the Offaly senior hurling set-up within it.

Moycullen have also saw former Leitrim and Cavan goalkeeper Niall O'Donnell transferring to the club this season, with ex-Galway forward Owen Gallagher returning this year after his stint with St Joseph’s in Antrim.

Clancy’s men defeated Dunmore MacHales (3-16 to 2-15) on Sunday for their second win in as many games in the Frank Fox Cup race and, speaking to the Connacht Tribune after the game, Gallagher confirmed former Mayo supremo Horan’s recent addition to the managerial set-up.

“James Horan has been at the highest level of the game, highest level professionally; he knows about performance, he knows about football, he’s bringing a fresh pair of eyes,” Gallagher stated.

“We were county champions last year; you’re always looking to add something else, if you stay doing the same thing, every team will catch up to you; they’ll overtake you.

“It’s evolution not revolution as we always say, always trying to add another string to your bow. James Horan is that fresh pair of eyes from outside, something different.

“He’s doing a lot of stuff with our attack, trying to develop that fast attack and I think we kind of showed that today in parts, in parts we were also sloppy. It’s trying to develop that with these new rules and the space, going direct and moving the ball and getting the head up.”
