Meath defender Sean Coffey is set for a long-term spell on the sidelines after confirmation that the injury he suffered on club duty last weekend was an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear.

The Royals’ centre half-back suffered the injury two minutes into the second-half of Ballinabrackey’s senior football championship defeat to Wolfe Tones and, after treatment on the field, he was brought to hospital by ambulance.

The Meath Chronicle confirmed yesterday that the injury was indeed an ACL tear which now sees the 23-year-old out of action for the long-term as he embarks on his recovery.

It’s a huge blow for Meath boss Robbie Brennan who saw his centre-forward Ruairí Kinsella sustaining an ACL injury before the All-Ireland SFC clash with Derry in June.

The Dunshaughlin clubman is currently in recovery after undergoing surgery in the weeks after the injury, but isn’t expected to return to action until next year at the earliest.
