University of Limerick are Sigerson Cup champions for the first time thanks to a 0-17 to 1-11 victory over UCC at Croke Park last night.

David Power’s side dominated large portions of the opening 20 minutes at headquarters to run up a 0-8 to 0-4 lead on their Cork counterparts.

Ciaran Collins and skipper Brian McNamara were among those to do the damage for the would-be winners during that period ahead of UCC producing a strong finish to the first-half.

A couple of points were backed up by Ciaran Santry's goal on the half-hour mark which left it all square at 0-9 to 1-6 when the sides went it at the break.

Frank Irwin had a shot at goal saved 10 minutes into the restart and his Mayo colleague Cian McHale would come up with a couple of big scores for UL down the home stretch.

After the teams were level twice more, Power’s charges hit four points unanswered to storm to the title, with McHale sending over two of them and Cathal Brosnan and substitute Daithi Hogan adding white flags.

UCC hunted a late goal but it never came their way as points at the other end from Cathal Ryan and Hogan sealed UL’s maiden triumph in this competition.
