Limerick earned their first points in this year’s Allianz Hurling League campaign by handing Kilkenny a 1-26 to 2-16 defeat the TUS Gaelic Grounds this afternoon.

John Kiely’s men got their got their goal through Aaron Gillane in the 57th minute to go and record a seven-point victory and inflict the Leinster champions with their first league loss in the process.

The Shannonsiders got out to a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after nine minutes before the points of John Donnelly and Eoin Cody were backed up by a Mossy Keoghan goal in the 15th minute which brought the sides level.

Limerick got motoring again and went in ahead at half-time by 0-14 to 1-9 as Aidan O’Connor, Diarmaid Byrnes, Adam English and David Reidy all sailed over points for them.

Gearoid Hegarty, Peter Casey (2) and O’Connor, who finished with 0-10, registered scores to help keep the Munster side in front through game’s third quarter and Gillane’s goal would leave the Cats with a mountain to climb for the closing 15 minutes or so.

Cody would hit the net for the visitors in the 65th minute but a Liam Moore point in injury-time would be all that followed it up, leaving Kilkenny seven short in the end as the Treaty men got up and running in Division 1A.
