Ben O’Connor cut a contented figure after his new Cork charges opened their Allianz Hurling League defence with a rousing 3-25 to 1-17 victory over Waterford at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
A bumper attendance of 20,464 took in the hurling and football double-header which yielded wins for both Cork teams, with the hurlers – who started with 10 of last year’s All-Ireland final team – giving an exhibition against their Ballygunner-less opponents.
“That’s what we’re looking for, we’re looking for team play,” O’Connor told the assembled media.
“There’s no point having a shot that you’ve a 50% of chance of scoring if there’s a fella inside with a 70% chance, so why not give it to him?
“We work hard in training at that. And look, it’s nice when it pays off in a match out here because you can show the clips during the week. That’s money in the bank for you, so delighted when things like that come off.”
Next up for the Rebels is a trip to Salthill to face Galway on Saturday evening.
