Westmeath recorded their first competitive win under new manager Mark McHugh by edging out Sligo on a 2-14 to 1-16 scoreline at TEG Cusack Park this afternoon.

Jonathan Lynam grabbed two first-half goals as the hosts moved towards a 2-9 to 0-7 lead at the break, but Sligo were buoyed by a Cian Lally goal 13 minutes into the second-half and eventually hit the front with Pat Spillane’s two-pointer late on.

It’d take points from Sam McCartan and Shane Corcoran to win it in the dying stages for the Lake men who join Wexford on two points in the Allianz Football League Division 3 table following the Slaneysiders’ 1-13 to 0-12 win over Fermanagh in Enniskillen earlier today.

Gavin Sheehan crashed in the game’s only goal from close range for the visitors 10 minutes before half-time and the points of Eoin Hughes, Sean Nolan and Cathal Kehoe late on would see them over the line to an impressive opening victory.

In Division 4, Tipperary avoided an opening defeat to London (0-21 to 0-21) thanks to Cian Smith’s last-gasp two-pointer in Ruislip, where the Exiles had led by 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time, while goals proved key for Carlow as they saw off Antrim by 2-16 to 1-15 in Portglenone, with Niall Roche and Chris Blake (penalty) netting the victors’ majors inside the opening dozen minutes.

In Aughrim, Mark Jackson’s two-point free in injury-time proved the difference for Oisin McConville’s Wicklow side as they edged a 1-17 to 2-13 win against Leitrim to get up and running at the first attempt.
