Derek Lyng doesn’t think Kilkenny are any worse off for playing in the Walsh Shield rather than the Walsh Cup as they gear up for the start of the Allianz Hurling League.

The Cats were consigned to the Shield competition after they opted not to play their Walsh Cup Round 1 game against Westmeath amid fears that their players would risk injury by playing on a 3G pitch. They easily accounted for Laois in last Sunday’s Walsh Shield semi-final and have a home final against Kildare to look forward to this weekend before opening their Allianz League campaign against Offaly on Sunday, January 25.

"We are where we are now. We'll get a very strong game off whoever we're playing next weekend," Lyng told Clubber after last Sunday’s win.

"We have plenty of numbers in there and we'll have internal matches all going well the following week so we have to get on with it.

"All the time we're looking to improve our own game so really opposition doesn't matter a huge amount and who we're playing at this time of year. We just have to get on with trying to practice what we're doing in training, bringing that into a game situation and getting a bit of sharpness ahead of the League."
