Patrick ‘Hoggie’ Horgan was accorded a civic reception by Cork Lord Mayor, Cllr Fergal Dennehy, this week to mark his extraordinary contribution to sporting life in the city.

Hurling’s all-time top scorer in both league and championship was joined at City Hall by his wife Ashley, their son Jack as well as other family members, friends and supporters for the special event.

The Glen Rovers sharpshooter won four Munster SHC medals (2014, 2017, 2018 and 2025) and four All-Stars (2013, 2017, 2018, 2019) in an 18-year inter-county career, but All-Ireland glory eluded him, despite playing in four finals. He recently announced his inter-county retirement, but is staying involved with the Rebels as an U20 selector.

“Throughout history, some individuals have achieved such fame and influence that they’re instantly recognised by a single name,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Think Bono, Beyoncé, Madonna, Pele, Ronaldo, or Picasso. Closer to home we have Sonia, Roy, ‘ROG’, Rob and Derval. And here tonight, we have ‘Hoggie’. The names don’t just identify a person - they evoke an entire world of talent, achievement, and impact.

“Today, we honour you, Patrick, and we thank you for so many wonderful memories, for your skill, your commitment to the game, and to the jersey,

“We thank you for all the drama, the excitement, the ecstasy – for so many magical moments in the rich and storied history of Cork hurling.”
