Westmeath's towering full back Tommy 'Jogger' Doyle has brought the curtain down on his 13-year inter-county hurling career.
Doyle was recognised as one of the best number three's in the game, despite having rarely gotten the chance to shine on the big occasions. He won a Joe McDonagh Cup medal in 2021 and was at the peak of his powers when he memorably held Seamus Callanan scoreless when Westmeath ran Tipperary close in an All-Ireland SHC qualifier in Thurles in 2017.
Hailing from a staunch hurling family - his father of the same name played full back for the Lake County in the 1980s - Doyle has also given terrific service to his club Lough Lene Gaels, who he usually lines out at full forward for. But he is still awaiting his first Westmeath SHC medal, with the Gaels having lost the last three finals to Castletown-Geoghegan (twice) and Raharney.
Under the heading 'End of an era!', Westmeath GAA paid the following short tribute to 'Jogger': "After 13 seasons of dedication, leadership, and pride, Tommy Doyle hangs up the Westmeath jersey.
"Thank you for everything, Tommy — a true servant of the game and an inspiration to all who wear the maroon and white.
"An Iarmhí Abú."
