Loughmacrory defied the odds to defeat Trillick St MacCartan’s by 0-18 to 2-11 and clinch their first Tyrone senior football championship title in the process.
Gareth Donaghy’s point in the 59th was the difference between the sides in end, as Marty Boyle’s men put their club’s name on the O’Neill Cup by tearing up the script on the nine-time champions in Omagh.
Trillick got out to an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead in this decider, but fell behind by the 10th minute as scores from Eoin McElholm, Cathal Donaghy and Cathaoir Gallagher had their opponents up by four prior to Ciaran Daly finding the net for St MacCartan’s.
A couple of Ruairi McCullagh points were backed up by a two-pointer from Eoin McElholm after that however, sending Boyle’s charges in with a 0-12 to 1-6 advantage at the break.
Cathal Donaghy’s score made it a four-point game after the change of ends, but another Daly goal brought Trillick right back into it and the scores of Richie Donnelly and Lee Brennan eventually brought them level coming towards the home stretch.
With the coveted title up for grabs, it was Gareth Donaghy that stepped up to land what proved the winning point as Loughmacrory made history at Healy Park.
Loughmacrory won their first Tyrone senior title on Sunday with a 0-18 to 2-11 win over Trillick.
