Tipperary hurling great John ‘Mackey’ McKenna has passed away at the age of 87.
The Borrisokane native won four All-Ireland senior hurling titles (1961, ’62, ’64 and ’65) in the space of five years during his playing days with the Premier County.
The 1964 Liam MacCarthy Cup decider saw him lining out at full-forward against Kilkenny and netting a goal against the Cats in his county’s 5-13 to 2-8 victory at Croke Park.
The following year he would contribute five points in Tipp’s All-Ireland final success over Wexford.
‘Mackey’ McKenna also won six Munster titles and four national leagues during a glittering career, and this past summer saw Borrisokane unveiling a monument in his honour at the club.
