Leitrim Gaels have been crowned county senior football champions for the first time after dealing Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins a 1-19 to 0-14 defeat in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Having first formed as a club in 1997, the Gaels reached their first SFC final by dethroning Mohill with a 4-14 to 3-7 win two weeks ago and they delivered another comprehensive win here to etch their name on the Fenagh Perpetual Cup.
The victors made the better start in this decider to get out to a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 11 minutes, but Ballinamore pulled level through Paul Honeyman’s frees and hit the front via captain Shane Moran in the 20th minute.

Conall Jones put the Gaels ahead again prior to a Honeyman two-point free sailing over at the other and Stephen’s Goldrick’s free leaving it at 0-7 apiece when the sides went it at the break.
The sides would be level three more times in the opening 10 minutes of the second-half before David Regan smashed in the game’s only goal for Leitrim Gaels on 42 minutes.
From there, Mal Guckian’s men held on to their three-point advantage until Garvan Jones fired over a two-pointer from a free and backed up with another from inside the arc to make it 1-16 to 0-13 with give minutes left in normal time.
Goldrick’s two-pointer three minutes later drew a mighty roar from the Gaels contingent at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, with centre-back Donal Casey rounding off the winning tally on a historic occasion for his club.
