Camogie and ladies football clash condemned by Westmeath club

A general view of footballs.

Five dual players in Westmeath were forced to choose between important camogie and ladies football games which clashed last Saturday.

The Milltownpass ladies footballers were forced to line out without four key players for their Leinster club junior championship preliminary round tie against Dublin champions Raheny as they were involved with Clonkill, who ended Raharney’s long reign as Westmeath senior camogie champions at the same time in TEG Cusack Park. Unsurprisingly, a depleted Milltownpass side were well beaten on a 1-8 to 5-16 scoreline.

In a Facebook post on Friday night, the Westmeath club lamented: “Despite the best efforts of Westmeath LGFA, our team management and officials, Milltownpass will now be forced to play the first round of the Leinster Junior championship without four key players. The fifth dual player has made a decision to pick football over a county camogie final. What’s most disappointing is that another team in the same competition has had their Leinster junior fixture rescheduled to next weekend for the very same reason - a clash with their county camogie final.

“Girls who have trained all year and who are proud to represent both their club and their county have been denied this opportinity, and we believe that this is totally unfair and was easily avoidable. It is also extremely disappointing when there is such a current focus on player welfare issues.”
