Kingscourt Stars tore up the script against Gowna at Kingspan Breffni this afternoon to secure their first Cavan senior football championship title in a decade.
Colin Kelly’s side stormed to a 2-16 to 0-13 victory over their Longford border counterparts who were seeking a third Oliver Plunkett Cup success in four years this afternoon.
A repeat of the 2023 SFC decider in the Breffni County, the champions on that occasion ran up an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead here through the scores of Robbie Fitzpatrick, Conor Madden and Cian Madden before the Stars halved their deficit.
Padraig Faulkner’s point had it at 0-7 to 0-5 before Kevin Curtis’s goal saw Kingscourt hitting the front in first-half injury-time and they'd goal again through Joe Dillon before the half-time whistle (2-7 to 0-8).
Fitzpatrick looked to get Gowna motoring with a point early on in the resumption, but it was their opponents that had all the momentum as Faulkner, Meath star Jordan Morris and Dillon sent over unanswered scores that increased their lead to double digits.
Two more frees from Morris made it 2-15 to 0-9 with 10 minutes left in normal time in which time Fitzpatrick and Cian Madden grabbed consolation scores for a stunned Gowna side.
The triumph is Kingscourt’s first SFC success since their 2015 final win over Castlerahan, marking a 12th overall for the O'Raghallaigh Park club as they now join Mullahoran in third on the roll of honour list in the Breffni County.
