Mayo will play Kerry for a place in the All-Ireland minor football championship final in two weeks’ time after edging out Offaly with a 3-13 to 4-7 victory at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.
Three first-half goals saw the Westerners leading by nine points at the halfway stage in Roscommon, but the Leinster champions would hit three majors of their own after the change of ends to keep the heat on their opponents right until the final whistle.
Conor Hession’s goal in the opening minute marked the perfect start for Mayo, and while Offaly shot in front with a Ruairi Woods goal four minutes later, it was the Connacht side that went on to dominate the second quarter.
Dara Flanagan hit the net on 15 minutes to draw matters level and Conor Coghill raised another green flag which helped Mayo move towards a 3-7 to 1-4 half-time lead.
Roger Ryan’s lads buried in a Tony Furey goal from close range two minutes into the restart and found the net again through Cian McNamee to leave a score in it with 15 minutes left to play.
Woods shot over the next score for the Faithful County, and while it’d be erased by Flanagan at the other end, the game would be level when Dylan Dunne netted his team’s fourth goal in the 51st minute.
A Furey free nudged Offaly in front but it was Mayo that struck over the remaining scores in the closing stages, as a Hession two-pointer proved key and was backed up by singles from Oran Murphy and Ben Joyce.
