Former Down footballer John McGovern helped Dungannon Swifts to an historic Irish Cup success last weekend.

The striker opened the scoring in last Saturday’s final at Windsor Park, only for Cliftonville to equalise in the second half. Despite playing a large part of the game with 10 men, Dungannon held out for penalties where they prevailed by 4-3 in the shootout.

The victory means the multi-talented 22-year-old Ballyholland clubman now has an Irish Cup medal to go along with the Ulster U20FC and Tailteann Cup medals he won with Down in 2023 and ’24 respectively.

"I'm absolutely buzzing. Coming into this, people had us as underdogs but to go out and put in the performance we did, especially going down to 10 men, shows the characters in our dressing room," McGovern enthused.

"European football for Dungannon, scoring a goal in an Irish Cup final and winning the first-ever Irish Cup for the club is something to write in history.”
