The Camogie Association Annual Congress took place today in the Hodson Bay Hotel. 150 delegates from Ireland and international camogie units considered motions to shape the future of the Association.
Congress was hosted by Roscommon Camogie, with chairperson Kieran Kenny proudly welcoming delegates to Roscommon.
Brian Molloy, Uachtarán of the Camogie Association welcomed delegates and thanked the GAA for their continued support to the Camogie Association. During his address to delegates, he called on Camogie clubs to field Ladies Football teams and LGFA clubs to field Camogie teams.
"The Camogie Association and the LGFA have the capacity to very significantly grow our respective membership simply by engaging with each other and facilitating all our players to access and play both codes," he said.
The Uachtarán announced an extension of the successful sponsorship partnership with Carmel Naughton for the Glen Dimplex Camogie Championship, as well as announcing Toyota as the official Car Partner of the Camogie Association and thanked all of the fantastic Association sponsors.
The Uachtarán also called for Camogie and our national Gaelic sports to be included in the national education curriculum.
“Our National Sports are the sole component of our national culture that aren't taught in our national schools," he said. "As we move into the new integrated single association model it would be a brilliant way to copper-fasten the future of our game if the Government were to announce that Camogie (along with Football, Ladies Football and Hurling) was going to be taught to every child in the country through the schools system.”
The Uachtarán provided a comprehensive update on the progress being made towards integration, reaffirming the objective of achieving “one single unified Association providing equally and equitably for each of our 4 great National Gaelic games - Camogie, Ladies Football, Hurling and Football.
Also at Congress, Marie Kearney (Cork) concluded her term as Camogie Association Secretary. Marie will be replaced by Hilda Breslin (Kildare), former President of the Association.
61 motions across a range of topics were considered by delegates on the day and the following key decisions were made:
· revision to the Associations code of conduct and disciplinary procedures were adopted
· the Appointment of a Female Liaison Officer for all teams was adopted
The Uachtarán also welcomed the decision of Congress today to adopt a motion which inserts formal recognition of the Gaelic Players Association into Rule. He said:
"I want to thank delegates for supporting this motion - the GPA and ourselves have always been united in our commitment to enhanced player welfare, the growth of female sports and the betterment of Camogie. I'm confident that the formal recognition of their important role will further strengthen our relationship and provide a platform for collaborative engagement into the future."
