Monaghan dealt Cork their second defeat in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League by recording a 3-16 to 1-15 victory at Grattan Park, Inniskeen this afternoon.

First-half goals from Jack McCarron (penalty), Stephen O’Hanlon and Ryan Wylie, along with the long distance frees of All-Star ‘keeper Rory Beegan for two-pointers, were key for the Farney men as they bounced back from their loss to Roscommon last weekend to keep themselves in a strong position for promotion.

The hosts’ goals were the difference at half-time (3-5 to 0-5) and they’d extend their lead to a dozen points early on in the resumption with a Beggan two-pointer from a free being backed up by a McCarron free inside the arc.

A penalty from Mark Cronin, who finished with 1-8, saw Cork reducing their arrears to eight points with 10 minutes remaining but the scores of Conor McCarthy and Beggan (free) again from the two-point range saw out an important result for Gabriel Bannigan’s side.
