Mayo manager Kevin McStay said he was delighted with his team’s work-rate to see out victory against Tyrone in the closing stages of yesterday’s Allianz League third-round clash in Castlebar.

The Westerners picked up their first points of the Division 1 campaign by recording a 0-12 to 0-10 win over the Red Hands, with late points from Ryan O’Donoghue (free) and Fergal Boland proving the difference in the end.

Speaking after the game, McStay stated how he was “very pleased” by his team’s effort to bag what were two important points.

“I think it (the win) was deserved. We worked very, very hard in terms of the effort. I’m delighted with that,” he is quoted saying by Highland Radio. “Right to the end, there was a few critical balls in the last four or five minutes. One kick-out in particular I can remember, we went right after it and got it.

“So, very pleased and very pleased with the reaction over the last fortnight, but some of our numbers were very, very good the last two weeks. That’s overlooked sometimes; just finishing and areas like that we tried to tidy up.

“We’re a work in progress. It’s two points that we went after and two points that we’re delighted to get. The pressure of a result, that’s not something that we’re talking about down in the dressing room. We’re talking about the game on its merits.

“Every National League game is a building block towards the summer. We got three lads back today; Aidan (O’Shea), Jordan (Flynn) and Jack Coyne. Eoin O’Donoghue got a great look in in the corner and a few other lads that we’ve been looking at did really, really well. So, that’s all positive but the result was needed today. Results help the morale of everything we’re doing, but the manner in which we got it was very pleasing.”
