A Mark Russell two-pointer at the death saw Tipperary snatch a 3-13 to 1-18 win over Longford in this afternoon’s Allianz Football League Division 4 encounter in Clonmel.
After a Michael Freaney goal and Steven O’Brien’s ‘45’ had helped get Tipp level by the midway point of the second-half, Longford retook the lead and points from James Moran, Oran Kenny (free) and Dessie Reynolds looked to be enough for Mike Solan’s men.
However, the home side battled until the last whistle, and, in the end, it was Russell’s effort from along the sideline outside the 40-metre arc which proved the difference.
The result marks the Premier men’s first win of the league campaign, having drawn with Carlow the first day out, while the Midlanders suffered their first defeat after finishing all square with Limerick last weekend.
In Dungarvan, Carlow earned their first win of this year’s Division 4 campaign as they saw off hosts Waterford by 2-15 to 0-12.
Ross Dunphy and Kevin Murphy bagged the goals for Barrowsiders as they won out by nine and it’s a result which marks manager Shane Curran’s first competitive victory with the Leinster side since taking over this past September.
