Derry are through to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals after this evening’s dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Mayo at McHale Park, Castlebar.

Conor Doherty netted the winning penalty for Mickey Harte’s men who had forced extra time thanks to Chrissy McKaigue’s fisted effort before Mayo came from three points down in the added periods to send the game to penalties.

Underdogs coming into this one, Derry made the far superior start that saw them 0-6 to 0-2 up after the opening half-hour as Lachlan Murray and Shane McGuigan settled them in.

The home side trailed by three at the break before kicking the first four points of the resumption via Tommy Conroy (2), Aidan O’Shea and Ryan O’Donoghue (free) to storm in front.

Brendan Rogers levelled it ahead of Gareth McKinless steering the Oak Leafers ahead again, but the latter would give away a penalty minutes later which O’Donoghue expertly tucked away.

With 10 minutes remaining in normal time, the Westerners were two points to the good and looked like hanging on after a McGuigan free but McKaigue’s point in the fifth minute of injury-time saved Derry’s season (1-8 to 0-11).

Harte’s charges started extra time in impressive fashion with Rogers and Ethan Doherty (2) sailing over points and, after Kevin McStay’s men got motoring again to reduce their deficit to one, Conor Loftus grabbed a vital score ahead of Jordan Flynn grabbing the equaliser in injury-time to make sure penalties decided the outcome.

In the end, it was Doherty’s coolly taken spot kick that decided an airtight contest and it sees Derry headed for Croker next weekend as Mayo bowed out in cruel fashion.
