Louth are up and running in the group stages of the All-Ireland senior football championship thanks to a convincing 3-10 to 0-9 win over Meath in Inniskeen this evening.

Ger Brennan’s men netted all three of their goals in the opening 25 minutes, with Sam Mulroy’s strike in the 14th minute wiping out the 0-3 to 0-1 lead Meath had held at that stage.

Cathal Hickey responded with a point for the Royals but they were cut open again a minute later and this time Craig Lennon hammered to the net as the gap between the team began to widen.

Lennon would have another major 10 minutes before the break when a point attempt dropped down off the post into his path and that’d usher Louth towards a 3-5 to 0-5 half-time lead.

Louth stretched the lead to 10 with a couple of Mulroy points and, despite Ciaran Caulfield and Eoghan Frayne grabbing scores for Colm O’Rourke’s men, the points of Ciaran Keenan, Mulroy and Ciaran Downey ensured the double digit win for the Wee County and their first championship one over their neighbours since 1975.
