Clare got themselves up and running in the race for the Mick Mackey Cup after coming out on top in a thriller against Cork.

It finished 3-26 to 3-24 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, where late goals from Patrick Horgan and Robert Downey wouldn’t be enough to save the Rebels from a second defeat on the bounce.

After having trailed 0-13 to 0-11 at the halfway stage, Clare looked in bother when Horgan goaled for the home side in the first minute of the resumption.

Cork would go on to open up a 1-17 to 0-13 lead after that but a Mark Rodgers goal on 42 minutes was the perfect tonic for the Banner men and, after tying up the game, they’d goal again via Shane O’Donnell in the 57th minute.

Five minutes later and the sliotar would be in the Leesiders’ net again – this time it was David Fitzgerald that provided the cool finish after a sizzling solo run from the sideline and it had the scoreboard reading 3-23 to 1-23 in the visitors’ favour.

Despite their opponents getting back 2-1 in the time that remained, Brian Lohan’s side were able to hold out for the vital win here.
